American author, Washington Irving, wrote his now famous short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , while he was living abroad, as part of a collection of essays entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. The story is set in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow, in Tarrytown, New York, an area well known for its tales of hauntings and ghosts, spawning numerous theories among the local inhabitants. It is one of the finest examples of early American fiction and has remained enormously popular for nearly two centuries, inspiring an endless list of film, radio and theatrical productions.
