This book was written for people who want to make the best, most scientific hiring decisions within the structure of an interview. The people we have in mind come from many backgrounds. Some are new graduates of MBA programs, and others are seasoned alumni of the school of hard knocks. Some are engineers, scientists, and lawyers; others have backgrounds in logging, mining, and farming, construction or sales. These people have one thing in common. They will have to make decisions about whom to employ from a selection of applicants on the basis of a conversation we call the selection interview . This book should be required reading for people who want to interview as accurately and effectively as possible. This book has been divided into four sections. Part I (Chapters 1 & 2) orients the reader and provides the background to behavior description (BD) interviewing. Part II (Chapters 3-6) introduces BD principles and provides the practitioner with the tools that are needed to begin BD interviewing. Part III (Chapters 7-9) builds the skills necessary for practicing BD interviewing, and Part IV (Chapter 10) completes the processes of applicant assessment and final decision making. Will BD interviewing pay off for me? First, recent advances in costing the the benefits and expenses of staffing programs appear as simple tables, and the reader can move step by step to an understanding of the potential return on investment BD interviewing can achieve. In addition, the appendix provides a verbal summary of BD advantages specific to various situations.
