Product Overview

WELCOME TO SELLER PAYITAHT'S LIBRARY!!! In antiquity Zeugma was situated at one of the most important points, where major trade and communication routes leading from Anatolia and Syria to Mesopotamia crossed the Euphrates, along the northern limits of the Fertile Crescent. The discovery of the collection of bullae (over 100,000 pieces, the largest in the world) here points to a very active commercial life and the importance of the settlement as a guardpost and customs point between east and west. The scientific research and excavations at Zeugma were first begun about a decade ago by Gaziantep Museum which was joined by a French team in 1995. The last phase of the rescue operation in 2000 was partly funded by Packard Humanities Institute (PHI). The restoration and conservation of mosaics has been done by the Rome-based Centre di Conservazione Archeologica (CCA). Since the objective of this book is to help visitors to understand the story of the Zeugma mosaics, which are on display at Gaziantep Museum, easily, the academic vocabulary which generally applies to mosaic description has been avoided. Thus generic names such as 'tunic' or 'mantle' are used for almost all forms of drapery.
