Product Overview

Know thyself.

Self-understanding is a necessary prerequisite for learning, growth, and getting along with others. Without it, no amount of formal training or on-the-job experience will enable people to reach their full potential. So, as a trainer, where do you begin?

A bestseller for more than 25 years, the Personal Style Inventory is an accurate, statistically reliable personality-style assessment and classroom workshop that reveals an individual's dominant personality style. The PSI sheds light on the critical question: Why do I behave the way I do? The training makes it easy for people to see how they think, act, and feel. And with their eyes wide open, you've taken the first step toward improving your organization's communication, teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal relationships.

Learning Outcomes

- Identify an individual's dominant personality style and learn about the 16 different styles
- Discover the characteristics and potential strengths and weaknesses of each personality style
- Understand how each style interacts with the others, and how to improve these relationships
- Discover what types of tasks are suited (or not suited) to each personality style
- Develop an action plan to improve performance and relationships with others

How It Works

Participants respond to a series of 32 statements, each describing a behavior associated with one of the four pairs of personal style preferences:

- Extraversion or Introversion
- Sensing or Intuiting
- Thinking or Feeling
- Perceiving or Judging

Scoring of the assessment results in a Personality Style Preference Profile that is abbreviated by a combination of four letters symbolizing a preference for each dimension (i.e., ISTP = Introverted/Sensing/Thinking/Perceiving).

The Self-Assessment, which is available in print or online form, typically requires 15 minutes to complete. If using the Facilitator Set in a classroom training session, we recommend allowing one hour for interpretation of scores, debriefing, discussion, and action planning. Additional materials included in the Facilitator Set enable you to extend the learning into two half-day training programs, one for individuals and one for teams.

Trainer certification is not required in order to facilitate the Personal Style Inventory.

Uses for the PSI

The PSI is effective when used as a stand-alone learning instrument or as part of a more comprehensive training program on personal style, communication, diversity or team-building. The PSI can be used as:

- The centerpiece of a communication or leadership program
- A discussion starter for individual and personal counseling
- A diagnostic instrument for career planning and job selection
- A tool for mapping a team profile and improving group dynamics

The PSI vs. the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Both the PSI and the MBTI use Jungian theory to measure personality style. However, each instrument asks the individual to assume a different frame of reference. The MBTI attempts to measure how people usually behave. The PSI measures how people would prefer to behave. We believe the PSI approach unveils information about style which is closer to the true nature of an individual's personality style.
